Every eSylvan program begins with a comprehensive Skills Assessment - a nationally normed test that pinpoints your child's exact "skill gaps." Like the rest of the eSylvan program, your child takes the assessment test online at home. Because it is comprehensive, it takes about an hour and a half to complete the tests.

Personalized programs

eSylvan is effective because every program is individualized. Guided by the results of the Skills Assessment and your insight into your child's learning style and needs, eSylvan's highly trained staff is able to create a personalized math or reading program specifically for your child. Currently, eSylvan offers personalized online programs for Math Essentials (for students in grades 3-8) and Academic Reading (for students in grades 4-9).

Program length & scheduling

The exact length of your child's program depends on the specific academic needs uncovered in the Skills Assessment. eSylvan programs typically range from 40 to 120 hours of instruction. When you enroll your child, you will be able to choose an instructional schedule that best meets your family's needs. Each online session lasts one hour. eSylvan recommends 2 to 4 hours of instruction per week to accelerate progress. The goal is that every eSylvan student functions at or above grade level as quickly as possible.

Teaching methodology - Mastery Learning

eSylvan uses a proven method of instruction known as Mastery Learning. With this type of instruction, students demonstrate they have "mastered" a concept or skill by using it 3 to 5 times with 80-100% accuracy. When a student shows this kind of proficiency, he or she progresses to the next skill. In addition, students are periodically re-tested on skills to ensure retention.
